Amniotic Membranes for Dry Eye
Learn more about amniotic membranes and how Clear View Optometry can help manage your dry eye symptoms.
What are Amniotic Membranes?
In many situations, dry eyes persist even after using some of the traditional treatments. Drops, while very effective for a lot of people, fail, even the prescription ones. New treatments for relentless symptoms associated with dry eye, as well as other ocular surface diseases come from nature itself. Amniotic membranes have been used for years for surgical treatment of transplant rejection prevention because they have very strong anti-inflammatory properties. Dry eye has inflammation associated with the symptoms in most cases. Amniotic membranes are placed directly on the front of the eye, and provide not only a nourishing and protective barrier to help facilitate corneal health, but can also provide rejuvenating stem cell contributions to the cornea and prevent future corneal damage due to dryness.
How Do Amniotic Membranes Work?
These densely rich-in-nutrient membranes provide stem cells for healing and a platform for the growth of new, healthy cells in the corneal and surrounding tissues. They are applied in the office by the doctor, as simple as putting on a contact lens, just as millions of people do daily around the world. The amniotic membrane, over the following days, is integrated into the surface of the eye. The patient is brought back to the office where the contact lens, that has been placed on the eye with the membrane, is removed in about a week. The membrane stem cells, and their healing properties, last long after the contact lens is removed.
