The Dry Eye Clinic @ Clear View Optometry

Did you know that nearly 90% of all dry/watery eyes are due to your tears evaporating too fast?

Also, did you know that most of the symptoms of dry eyes, like watering, scratchy, itchy, burning, and blurry vision are due to inflammation of the front surface of the eyes?

Typical Dry Eye symptoms include:

  • Redness or eyes that appear irritated and bloodshot
  • Excessive tearing, or eyes that always water
  • Consistent burning or tingling sensations of the eyes
  • Eyes that feel scratchy, itchy or feel like they have sand in them
  • Increased sensitivity to bright lights or sunlight
  • Blurry vision

What causes Dry Eye?

There are many potential causes of dry eye but mostly it is due to bad tear make-up.

  • Disease of the Meibomian Glands
    • There are glands near the top and bottom eye lashes that produce part of our tears. When these glands don’t work properly, your tears may evaporate too quickly and cause inflammation. Aging is the most likely cause of poor Meibomian Gland function.
  • Poor or slow production of tears.
    • When you can’t produce enough tears, the eyes will almost certainly become dry and irritated.
    • Some inflammatory diseases like Sjogren’s Syndrome, Lupus and other autoimmune diseases can cause inflammation and be the culprit.
    • Also, some oral medications can cause poor production of tears.
